The Life Of A DJ

As technology morphs, so does the world of dance and DEREK“TheBandit” is, yet again
at the forefront taking original music to every corner of the globe.

You know him for his killer sets, you love the impressive number of qualified
and critically acclaimed dance compilations he’s released – now “The Bandit”
is embracing all things digital.

PODCASTING is the future and Derek is there, in association with Blackdot IT SOLUTIONS, he begins broadcasting an hour-long show, ready for download at “The Bandit’s” website  ( from 1 February 2006.

Known as DEREK“TheBandit’s” SOUND REPUBLIC, this exciting extension to his already
broad and varied portfolio, he loves the medium, and as “TheBandit” does with everything he touches, intends delivering a show filled with originality, spontaneity and only the very finest in music sourced throughout South Africa. “This is such and extraordinarily exciting time in music and I have been looking for a way to go beyond our borders and my podcasts will do just that.”

With all tracks ‘pod-friendly’, “TheBandit” has secured the rights from each and every
DJ/producer and writer of all that the world will hear when they download the monthly
digital dance experience. “Podcasting is seeing music go back to the underground,”
Derek says. “Technology makes it possible for me to gain access to some of this
country’s freshest talent, which I aim to take into the mainstream and expose it
to as many punters as possible.”

Podcasting offers you the choice on just how you get your dance fix. With bandwidth
becoming less of a problem in South Africa with the fast growing world of ADSL at
home and work, the phenomena is catching on in a big way. It’s recommended that podcast files be downloaded from the fasted possible connection for quick access. Whether you burn your session onto CD for later listening, or moving to your stereo, car or your MP3, the options are there for the picking.

Initially the show will be posted monthly, with the aim and expected popularity to drive
it to become a weekly must-have for all discerning fans of dance. “TheBandit’s” ethos and mantra is: “chase new talent, chase new music and celebrate it with the masses. We so often look outside of our own country to gauge what’s hot, when in reality, so much more is literally busting out of our own backyard, and I will be showcasing as much of that raw talent as I possibly can within the hour.”

With three mixes, one of which will be a chill-out session and full two features, the 60 minutes
will be jam-packed. One of the features is brought to you by South Africa’s leading gaming monthly magazine, NAG (New Age Gaming), added to which motivational speaker Justin Cohen will slip in alongside the decks to share and edify the download diligent. With add-ons and more surprises waiting in the wings, podcasting with “The Bandit” is about to change the way you listen, what you hear and how you hear it.

“It’s great to be able to download and listen when you are ready,” Derek exits.
“Radio is a great medium and I love it – podcasting at the other end of the spectrum
gives the listener the power to play, replay and party when they are up for it, and that’s colossal.”

What is a podcast?
A podcast is a media file (usually audio) posted on the Internet. It can be a radio show, new music release, monologue or anything else in an MP3 format. Using special ‘podcatching’ software applications called aggregators, you can configure your computer to automatically download podcasts and store them in music programs, such as iTunes.

Why ‘pod’ cast?
The term ‘podcast’ comes from Apple’s iPod MP3 player. You can listen to podcasts on an Apple iPod, of course, but you can also listen to them on virtually any personal computer or mp3 player—but ‘podcast’ is easier to say than ‘MP3cast’.

How do I get started?

Download it from
 I Podder “Jucie”

• Download iPodder software at  , free for the Windows, Mac and Linux platforms.
• Subscribe to podcasts by using iPodder’s directory under “Podcasts, Categories, Entertainment”. iPodder will download them to your desktop when they become available.
• Listen to the downloaded podcasts on your computer, iPod or any other mp3 player.
This programs supports broken downloads with a resume function.

• If you have the latest version of iTunes (v4.9), you can subscribe to podcasts by choosing ‘Advanced
• Subscribe to Podcast…’ from the menu. Just copy and paste the URL for the feed of your choice.
• You may also go to Podcasts in the iTunes Music Store and search for “SIRIUS” to find all the feeds available from your favourite broadcaster.
• Your selections will be updated and downloaded directly into iTunes – just click Podcasts to listen.
This programs does not support broken downloads.

Vinyl Makes A Comeback

Updated: 11:44, Tuesday July 12, 2005 (From

Vinyl, once seen as a dying format in the music industry, is back in fashion – according to new sales figures. Sales of the records have shot up by 87.3% compared to the same three-month period last year.

The British Phonographic Industry says annual sales of vinyl singles are now approaching 1.4 million. In the twelve months up to March 31 this year, sales of the seven-inch hit the 1,380,000 mark.

This already represented a year-on-year improvement of 64%, and the best 12 months for vinyl since 1998.

New figures show that in the three months from April to June vinyl flew off the shelves even more rapidly.

Sales rose by 87.3% from 154,216 sales during April to June 2004 to 288,780 for the same period this year.

The improvement in fortunes of the seven-inch has been attributed to fans of British indie and rock bands, which are today’s big-hitters in the charts.

The vinyl top 20 is dominated by a new generation of rock acts, such as The Libertines, Babyshambles, Kaiser Chiefs and Franz Ferdinand.

Vinyl has remained popular with DJs, because they allow scratching and mixing.

There has also been more evidence from music stores that they are being brought for home use.

It’s a pity is is so expensive!

Welcome to 2006
I hope you had a fantastic one!
The show on Jacaranda went well, it was really long. Six hours on my feet! I couldn’t believe how busy Monte was!!!
Went home and had some champayne and then headed off to H20….
Surge was playing before me, have to say I didn’t really enjoy what I heard.
Set times were very short – 60 minutes… So it was alot of quick mixing to get as many choons in as possible! I had an absolute blast! The crowd were so up for it at 02h30…it was a truly memorable way to end the year….Thanks to Dave, Vaughn & Connath.
I’m taking some time off in January, so I won’t be in clubland for awhile. I will however still be doing my show on Jacaranda Sat’s from 18h00…
Hope you have and awesome year!
